## How Do They Encrypt Your Files?

Both Dropbox and OneDrive use server side encryption, meaning they store and manage your decryption keys. While their system protects your file from external threats, they retain the ability to access your files technically. Dropbox encrypts all your files at rest using 256-bit AES and uses SSL/TLS for data in transit. The files are first divided into blocks which are then individually encrypted before being stored on Dropbox's Block Storage Servers. Dropbox [explicitly states](https://help.dropbox.com/security/how-security-works) that they do not offer "[client-side encryption](/client-side-encryption/)...also doesn't support the creation of your own private keys."For Advanced, Business Plus and Enterprise plans, Dropbox offers Advanced Encryption by offering a more advanced key-management system. This system uses unique team keys and a multilayer key-encryption approach, with top-level keys generated through AWS KMS and stored on hardware security modules.

### OneDrive encryption

OneDrive encrypts all your files at rest using AES-256 and uses TLS for encrypting files in transit. The [official Microsoft documentation states](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/purview/data-encryption-in-odb-and-spo) that encryption "at rest includes two components: BitLocker disk-level encryption and per-file encryption of customer content." Your stored content is broken into chunks, with each chunk encrypted using its own unique key.These chunks "are stored as blobs in our [Microsoft's] blob store...are randomly distributed across multiple blob containers." The key to each of these chunks is "encrypted and stored separately in the content database." In terms of data in transit, Microsoft states that Internet connections to OneDrive use TLS with 2048-bit keys.

## Which Is Better for Protecting Sensitive Files?

A cloud storage provider with a good security architecture does not automatically guarantee file privacy. Both Dropbox and OneDrive scan your files using automated systems for a variety of reasons. Some of these include to prevent malware, prohibited content, copyright material and faster indexing - denying you the liberty of having complete control.

While some people accept because the automated systems aim at stopping illegal content, your files are still being scanned nonetheless. Furthermore, in "some jurisdictions, Microsoft also conducts a limited review of content when you upload it to your OneDrive." Thus, Microsoft OneDrive is far from being private and does scan your files.
