# How to Encrypt Files and Keep Your Data Secure

July 17, 20266 min readIf you deal with sensitive information or confidential documents on a daily basis, encrypting files is of utmost necessity. File encryption protects all kinds of important information, be it financial records or medical documents. If your device is stolen and sensitive information is not protected, hackers can use it to carry out identity theft and financial fraud.

In this guide, we will show you how to encrypt files on Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone and for cloud storage. You will learn the importance of storing and sharing encrypted files to your clients and team. If you're an individual or business looking to encrypt only PDFs, check out our [free encrypt pdf tool](/tools/encrypt-pdf/).

## What Does It Mean to Encrypt Files?

In simple terms, encrypting files or file encryption converts readable data into an unreadable format using an encryption key. This ensures that only people with the correct decryption key or password can access those files. Therefore, it also prevents any unauthorized access or human error such as accidental sharing.

### Why Should You Encrypt Files?

There are many benefits of encrypting files, especially if you deal with confidential information on a daily basis. Whether it's in terms of storing or sharing, you should encrypt your files for privacy and regulatory reasons. Other major reasons include :- Safeguarding sensitive information from hackers
- Securing your data if your device is stolen or lost
- Safely sharing confidential documents

## Easiest Way to Encrypt Files on Windows

Below is the simplest way to encrypt files on Windows if you are on Windows :

- Right click the file or folder you want to protect.
- Select **Properties**, followed by the **Advanced** option.
- Check the box - **Encrypt contents to secure data**.
- Click **OK**, then **Apply**.

If you are unable to check the 'encrypt contents to secure data' option, that means you are on Windows Home. In that case, consider using DragBin's free encrypt PDF tool or create an account which will encrypt all files automatically while sharing.

## Encrypt Files on Mac In Simple Steps

Mac includes disk utility, allowing you to encrypt files without installing any third party additional software.

- Open **Disk Utility** from Applications then Utilities.
- Click **File**, then **New Image** followed by **Image from Folder**.
- Select the folder you want to encrypt and click **Choose**.
- Select **AES-256 encryption**.
- Create a strong password and save it securely.
- Click **Save** to create the encrypted disk image.

## How to Encrypt Files on iPhone and Android

The safest method to encrypt files on iPhone and Android is to upload them to DragBin, a quantum resistant, [end-to-end encrypted cloud storage](/e2ee-encryption/). Using [client side encryption](/client-side-encryption/), your files are encrypted before they leave your device, so only you or authorized recipients can access them.

- Open DragBin's platform on the website.
- Create a DragBin account and get 25GB free or log in using your credentials.
- Tap on **'Home'** on the left pane and then navigate to the **'Upload'** button.
- Upload the file you want to protect.
- Choose the files you want to upload, then click **Open**.

The file is encrypted now and stored securely in DragBin's secure cloud storage.

### Encrypt Files With a Password Before Sharing

After you successfully upload a file to DragBin, you can encrypt files with a password before sharing. Adding a password is one of the simplest ways to prevent unauthorized access to shared files. Even if someone receives the link, they cannot open the file without the correct password.

- Right click the file you want to share and select **Share Link**.
- Enable the public link, then click **Done**.
- Open **Shared** from the left sidebar and select **Links**.
- Click the sharing icon next to the active link.
- Enable **Password Protection** and enter a strong password.
- Press **Enter** to save the password, then close the menu.

### How to Encrypt Files for Cloud Storage

You should choose a private cloud storage that offers a [zero knowledge security architecture](/zero-knowledge-encryption/) before uploading sensitive files. In a zero knowledge security architecture, your data is encrypted locally before it is sent to the server and only you hold the key. All encrypted cloud storage platforms are not zero knowledge so make your choice carefully.

DragBin's zero knowledge platform ensures that nobody can view your files, not even the employees of DragBin. Your passwords, folders, files and filenames are completely private with complete metadata protection in place. On top of end-to-end encryption, we offer [post quantum encryption](/post-quantum-encryption/) to combat ["Harvest Now, Decrypt Later"](/harvest-now-decrypt-later/) attacks.

Encrypt files for cloud storage by choosing DragBin and get :- Unlimited file size uploads, unlimited sharing and unlimited bandwidth
- Integrated global CDN and easy migration from Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive
- Preview videos in 4k/8k and secure file management

## Common Mistakes to Avoid When Encrypting Files

Now that you have learnt how to encrypt files before you store and share them, here are some common mistakes that are to be avoided.

### Using Weak or Reused Passwords

Short or commonly used passwords like 1234 among others are easier to crack by attackers. Instead, you should use a long and unique password across different accounts that is difficult to guess. We recommend using DragBin's [strong password generator](/tools/strong-password-generator/) and [password strength checker](/tools/password-strength-checker/) before you proceed.

### Forgetting to Back Up Encryption Keys

Encrypting your files is only one side of the coin, remembering the password is the other. If you lose your encryption password or recovery key, you may permanently lose access to your files. For this reason, you should keep a secure backup of your encryption key or password in a trusted location.

### Sharing Passwords Insecurely

You should not share your passwords through the same email or messaging app used to share the file. If the attacker gets their hands on your device, discovering the password and breaching into your account will not be difficult. We advise you to use a separate, secure communication method instead.

### Relying on Cloud Storage Without End to End Encryption

Last but not the least, you should not use cloud storage that does not offer true end-to-end encryption. For example, Google Drive and Dropbox offer encryption but that is server side on their basic plans. Choose a zero knowledge cloud storage service like DragBin, where only you can access your encrypted files.[Switch to DragBin](https://app.dragbin.com/signup)
