Secondly, Proton AG is headquartered in Switzerland and its services are governed by Swiss privacy laws. Since the company is outside EU and US jurisdiction, Proton claims to be offering additional privacy protection. This is because the Swiss privacy laws restrict Proton from simply complying with foreign authorities' requests outside the legal framework. Third, Proton Drive complies with major global data security standards and privacy regulations including ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, HIPAA and CCPA. This in itself makes it a great cloud storage for small business and enterprises. Combined with its features, encryption and file privacy, it automatically becomes the first choice for many. ## Is Proton Drive Secure To Protect Your Files? There is a distinction between how a cloud storage service protects your files from external hackers and how it guarantees file privacy. We will first take a look at Proton Drive's security and encryption practices. Proton Drive protects your files using client side, end-to-end encryption combined with their [zero knowledge security architecture](/zero-knowledge-encryption/). Proton Drive's [privacy policy states](https://proton.me/drive/privacy-policy) that "metadata such as filenames, folder names, thumbnail previews are also end-to-end encrypted." While some operational information like "file/folder creation and modification times, permissions, and the username that created or uploaded a particular file" can be seen by them, this is more about user activity than security.Proton's [security page states](https://proton.me/drive/security) that it uses the open-source OpenPGP standard with high-performance elliptic curve cryptography (ECC Curve25519). Files are encrypted using AES-256 and Ed25519 is used for digital signatures. Since the data is encrypted locally on your device before being sent to the server, the keys are transmitted only in encrypted form. ### Proton Drive Encryption Practices Explained Proton Drive in their [security blog](https://proton.me/blog/protondrive-security) asserts that as soon as you upload a file, a client, a node key, symmetric session key and a passphrase for the file is generated. Large files are automatically split into blocks of at most 4 MB that are encrypted with the session key. Furthermore, these blocks are signed with a content to prevent reordering and then prepared for transmission. The encrypted data travelling between your device and the server in transit is protected using TLS. Once it reaches Proton's infrastructure, your encrypted data securely sits in servers which the company owns. The stored ciphertext remains unreadable to anyone, including Proton staff. ## Is Proton Drive Private Enough for a Privacy-Focused User? In this section we will discuss how Proton drives treats file privacy apart from the features already mentioned before. [Dropbox is not secure](/blog/is-dropbox-secure/) in terms of privacy because it does not offer end-to-end encryption by default and both [OneDrive and Google Drive have AI privacy problems](/blog/onedrive-vs-google-drive/). Compared to these, Proton Drive is safe and implements several safeguards. Proton Drive is considered a private cloud storage solution among other options like DragBin and [Internxt](/reviews/internxt/). As mentioned already, they are headquartered in Switzerland and are outside the Five Eyes / Fourteen Eyes and US jurisdiction. As mentioned on their security webpage, end-to-end encryption is protected under Article 271 of the Swiss Criminal Code. The platform is also private in terms of sharing, offering [secure link sharing](/features/secure-file-sharing/) features with zero knowledge encryption. The receipts who you are sharing the file with do not need to have a Proton Drive account. Sharing controls like password protection, edit controls and expiration links further enhance file security. ### Can Proton Drive Access My Files? No, Proton Drive and its employees cannot access your files. Since you are the only person with the decryption keys, they do not have the ability to decrypt your end-to-end encrypted data. Unlike Google Drive that can [scan your files](/blog/does-google-drive-scan-your-files/) and uses server side encryption, Proton offers complete file privacy. That being said, Proton AG has disclosed some data to Swiss authorities under binding legal orders. For instance :- In 2021, French authorities were investigating climate activists and requested data via Europol on a Proton Mail account. This account was associated with the [jmm18@protonmail.com](mailto:jmm18@protonmail.com) and Swiss authorities issued a court order compelling Proton to log and provide the user's IP address. - Another case reported in 2024 saw Spanish authorities investigating a member of the Catalan pro-independence group Democratic. The Spanish police Guardia Civil sent legal requests to Swiss authorities, using a "terrorism" and "organised crime" framing. Proton AG agreed to provide the recovery email address associated with the Proton Mail account used by the pseudonymous activist "Xuxo Rondinaire." - Reports from 2024 reveal that the FBI investigated accounts linked to the Defend the Atlanta Forest (DTAF) group and Stop Cop City protests in Atlanta.ia a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty request to Swiss authorities, Proton was ordered to provide information for the account - [defendtheatlantaforest@protonmail.com](mailto:defendtheatlantaforest@protonmail.com). These were legally binding orders directed by the Swiss Government and even though this doesn't prove that your data may always be handed over, accounts under investigation will likely be exposed. ## The Current Gap in Proton Drive's Encryption Standards Proton Drive does not offer post quantum encryption that is useful in combating active "Harvest Now, Decrypt Later" threats. Google itself has [set a 2029 timeline](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/technology/safety-security/cryptography-migration-timeline/) for post quantum migration, stressing the importance. Mere end-to-end encryption will not be able to combat future quantum computers and the threats they bring along. Back in May 2026, Proton started rolling out opt-in post-quantum encryption only for Proton Mail, adding an additional layer of protection for encrypted emails. However, Proton Drive has not yet received any of these updates and files today remain protected only by classical algorithms. This means that they are vulnerable to the quantum threat, despite it being in the early stage. In simple words, post quantum encryption is important because :- RSA relies on integer factorization, while ECC relies on the discrete logarithm problem, both of which are difficult for classical computers to solve. In 1994, Shor's algorithm theoretically proved that a powerful quantum computer will solve these problems efficiently, potentially allowing attackers to derive private keys from public keys. - Grover's algorithm gives quantum computers a quadratic speedup when searching through possible encryption keys, making symmetric encryption vulnerable to faster brute-force attacks. AES-256 would still be extremely strong but it would reduce its brute-force resistance from 2²⁵⁶ to roughly 2¹²⁸ operations. - Harvest Now, Decrypt Later or Store Now, Decrypt Later methods where attackers harvest encrypted data. They patiently waited for powerful quantum computers to arrive and will then breach it.
