If you already created a free DragBin account with 25 GB storage, your existing 25 GB free cloud storage plan remains unchanged. This change only applies to new accounts created from September 2026 onward. The privacy, features and [zero knowledge security architecture](/zero-knowledge-encryption/) remains unchanged. In this blog, we will discuss why we had to implement this change since storage infrastructure has ongoing costs. As DragBin has grown, maintaining a 25 GB allowance for every free account no longer made sense at the scale of the product. Reducing the free allocation allows us to keep the service sustainable while continuing to invest in secure, private storage. ## Why DragBin's Free Storage Had to Change Eventually We tried our best to offer the most generous free cloud storage plan but private storage has infrastructure costs. When we crossed 10,000 users, the economics behind the previous 25 GB free plan no longer worked at the scale we were operating. Every additional gigabyte requires real storage capacity, infrastructure and ongoing maintenance. As you already know, DragBin is an encrypted cloud storage in which your files are completely private. Nobody can see your files, folders, passwords, metadata or timestamps - not even the employees of DragBin. As a self-hosted, non-venture-backed product, DragBin has to make decisions based on sustainable infrastructure economics rather than relying on external funding. In simple words, the future of our platform lies in the hands of users who are genuinely willing to support private cloud storage and not merely free users. ## What We Learned From Offering 25 GB for Free Offering 25 GB of free cloud storage taught us how people actually used the product and interacted with it. We found that some users only needed 4 GB of storage for their needs and did not really need a paid subscription. If push came to shove, these users would just create another account and get more storage. Such an approach put DragBin's [paid plans](/pricing/) out of the equation, making the free plan the entire product for such users. This change is not merely about a number or about punishing users who want a free plan. It is enough for storing a small set of documents, memorable videos or even maintaining a small archive. The aim is to provide a real product experience not an artificially restricted demo that users can barely use.
