# Audio Converter: MP3, M4A, Opus, WAV and FLAC

Change audio files from one format to another, a whole batch at a time: MP3 for any player, M4A for Apple devices, Opus for small files, WAV or FLAC for editing. It runs in your browser, so your recordings stay on your device.

A file that's already in this format, at or below the chosen bitrate and with the same sample rate and channels, is copied as it is: re-encoding can't add quality back.

Note: video files work too: the soundtrack is converted and the picture is left out. For pulling audio out of videos, the [MP4 to MP3 converter](/tools/mp4-to-mp3/) can also copy the original track without re-encoding. The MP3 and FLAC encoders, and the AAC encoder in browsers without their own, are downloaded from dragbin.com the first time you pick those formats; your audio itself is never uploaded.

## How to Convert Audio Files

Choose what you want out, add your files, and save the results.

Step 1

Pick the output format, then the bitrate (or bit depth), sample rate and channels if you want to change them.

Step 2

Drop, paste or choose your audio files. Conversion starts as soon as they're added.

Step 3

Download each file, or all of them together as a zip.

## Why Use This Audio Converter?

It handles the formats people actually swap between, and it doesn't re-encode audio that's already in the shape you asked for.

### Batch Conversion

Add a folder's worth of tracks and download the converted files in one zip.

### No Needless Re-encoding

A file that already has the format and quality you chose is copied as it is, so it loses nothing.

### Real Settings

Set the bitrate, sample rate, mono or stereo, and 16-bit output for WAV and FLAC.

## Your Audio Stays With You

Voice memos, interviews and unreleased tracks are private. This converter does its work on your own device.

### No Uploads

Files are converted in the browser tab. For MP3, FLAC and (in some browsers) AAC output the page downloads an encoder from dragbin.com once; your audio is never sent anywhere.

### Desktop or Phone

Works in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 26 or later, on computers, phones and tablets.

### Names Kept

interview.wav becomes interview.mp3, so converted files are easy to match with the originals.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Which audio formats can I convert?

You can turn MP3, AAC and M4A, WAV, FLAC, Ogg (Opus or Vorbis) and WebM audio into MP3, M4A, raw AAC, Opus, WAV or FLAC. The soundtrack of an MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM video works as an input too; the picture is left out. Apple Lossless (ALAC) M4A files, WMA, AIFF and AMR can't be read in the browser.

### Are my audio files uploaded?

No. Your files are read and converted inside your browser tab and never sent to a server. To create MP3 or FLAC files, and AAC files in browsers that have no AAC encoder of their own, the page downloads the matching encoder from dragbin.com the first time you use it. Only the encoder is downloaded; your audio stays on your device.

### Does converting to a higher bitrate improve the sound?

No. Lost detail can't be put back, so turning a 128 kbps MP3 into a 320 kbps MP3 only makes the file bigger. When a file is already in the format you picked and its bitrate isn't above your choice, the converter copies its audio as it is instead of re-encoding it, and the result is marked "copied without re-encoding".

### Which format and bitrate should I choose?

MP3 at 192 kbps plays everywhere and sounds good for most music. M4A (AAC) gives similar quality in a smaller file and is the usual choice for Apple devices. Opus is the most efficient of the three, so 96 kbps is plenty for most listening, but some older players and Apple software won't open it. Pick WAV or FLAC when you need a lossless copy for editing; FLAC holds exactly the same sound as WAV in a noticeably smaller file.

### Why won't it convert in my browser?

Decoding and encoding compressed audio relies on the browser's WebCodecs audio support. Chrome, Edge, desktop Firefox and Safari 26 or later have it. Older Safari versions (on iPhone, iPad and Mac) and Firefox for Android don't, so there you can still convert WAV files and copy files that are already in the chosen format, but not decode MP3, AAC, Opus or FLAC.

### Is there a limit on file size?

Each file can be up to 2 GB on a computer and 500 MB on a phone or tablet. The finished file is built in your browser's memory, so very long recordings converted to WAV or FLAC can be refused if the output would be too big; a compressed format such as MP3 or Opus will fit.
