AAC encoding (in browsers without a built-in AAC encoder) by [FFmpeg's libavcodec](https://ffmpeg.org/) ([LGPL-2.1-or-later](https://ffmpeg.org/legal.html)), loaded as a separate file only when needed.

## Keep the clean original

Burned-in text can't be removed later, so keep the original video and its subtitle file. Store them in DragBin, encrypted on your device before upload. DragBin protects files with [client side](/client-side-encryption/), [quantum resistant encryption](/post-quantum-encryption/) (ML-KEM + AES-256) keeping sensitive data private with a [zero knowledge](/zero-knowledge-encryption/) security architecture.

## How to Hardcode Subtitles into a Video

Three steps, no install and no account:

Step 1

Drop your video, then the subtitle file that goes with it.

Step 2

Pick the font, size, colours, outline and position, and shift the timing if the lines are early or late. Scrub the preview to check.

Step 3

Burn the subtitles in and download the new MP4.

## Why Burn Subtitles In?

A separate subtitle file only helps when the player supports it. Text drawn into the picture travels with the video wherever it goes.

### Plays Everywhere

Social feeds, messaging apps and old TVs often skip subtitle files. Burned-in lines show on all of them.

### Watched on Mute

Many people scroll with the sound off. Captions in the frame keep them following along.

### One File to Share

No more sending a video and a .srt and hoping both end up in the same folder.

## Your Captions, Your Way

Style controls are simple on purpose, and the preview shows exactly what gets drawn.

### Readable Styling

Choose font, size, text and outline colours, an optional background box, top or bottom placement and line width.

### Timing Fix Built In

Move every line earlier or later in tenths of a second when the subtitles don't match the speech.

### No Uploads

The video and subtitles are processed inside this tab and never sent to a server.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What's the difference between burned-in and regular subtitles?

Regular (soft) subtitles are a separate text track or file that viewers can turn on and off. Burned-in (hardcoded) subtitles are drawn into the video picture itself, so they show up on every player and site, including ones that ignore subtitle files, but they can't be switched off or translated later.

### Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The video and the subtitle file are read and processed inside your browser tab and are never sent to a server. The page only downloads its own processing code from our site, including, in browsers without their own AAC audio encoder (Firefox, and Chrome or Edge on most Linux systems), an AAC encoder the first time a soundtrack has to be re-encoded, for example Opus audio from a WebM. Your files stay on your device.

### Which subtitle formats work, and is ASS styling kept?

SRT, WebVTT, ASS/SSA and SBV files work. Italic, bold and underline marks are drawn, but ASS/SSA styling such as custom fonts, colours, karaoke effects and positions isn't: every line uses the font, size, colours and position you choose on the page.

### Does burning subtitles reduce the video quality?

The video has to be re-encoded to draw text into each frame, so the picture is compressed again as an H.264 MP4. The tool uses a high quality setting, so the difference is usually hard to see, but the file size can change. Audio is copied as it is when MP4 can hold it.

### My subtitles are out of sync. Can I fix that here?

Yes. Set a timing offset in seconds: a positive number shows every line later, a negative one earlier. Scrub the preview to a spoken line to check it before you burn. For frame-rate or two-point sync, fix the file first in the Subtitle Converter.

### Which browsers can do this?

It needs the browser's video encoding support (WebCodecs): current Chrome, Edge and Firefox on a computer, Chrome on Android, and Safari 16.4 or later. Firefox for Android can't. Files can be up to 2 GB on a computer and 500 MB on a phone or tablet, and long videos take a while because every frame is encoded again.
