# Duplicate Photo Finder: Find Similar and Duplicate Photos

Before you back up a photo library, clear out the copies. Point this at a folder and it finds identical files, resized or re-saved versions, and near-identical burst shots, then helps you pick which ones to keep.

Choose photos

This tool never deletes anything. It reads your photos in this browser tab and gives you a list of the copies to remove yourself. Each new selection starts a new scan.

How alike must photos be?Strictcopies and resized versionsNormalalso re-saved and lightly editedLoosealso burst shots; check before deleting

Changing this regroups the photos instantly and resets your Keep ticks to the suggestions.

Getting ready to back up? Clean out the copies here, then store the rest with [DragBin Fotos](/fotos/). Sharing some of them? Remove location data first with the [EXIF remover](/tools/exif-remover-tool/).

Photos are never uploaded. If your browser can't open HEIC, AVIF or JPEG XL itself, the decoder is downloaded from dragbin.com the first time it's needed. [HEIC decoding by libheif (LGPL-3.0)](https://github.com/strukturag/libheif)

## How to Find Duplicate Photos

Choose your photos, review the groups, and take away a clean list.

Step 1

Choose a folder on your computer, or select photos on your phone. Scanning starts straight away.

Step 2

Look through each group. The best-quality copy is ticked to keep; change any tick you disagree with.

Step 3

Download the list of files to delete, or a zip of only the photos you're keeping.

## Why Use This Duplicate Finder?

Photo libraries collect copies from phone syncs, messaging apps, edits and exports. This finds the ones a filename search misses.

### Finds Look-Alikes Too

A visual fingerprint matches resized, re-compressed and burst photos, not just byte-identical files.

### Keeps the Best Copy

In every group the highest-resolution, largest file is suggested as the keeper.

### Whole Folders at Once

Scan up to 3,000 photos, subfolders included, with the full path shown for each file.

## Nothing Leaves Your Device, Nothing Gets Deleted

Your photo library is private, and deleting is your call. This page only reads your photos and reports what it finds.

### No Uploads

Photos are compared inside your browser tab. HEIC, AVIF and JPEG XL decoders come from dragbin.com only if your browser needs them.

### You Do the Deleting

A web page can't delete files on your disk, and this one never tries. You get a list to act on yourself.

### Smaller Backups

Removing copies before a backup saves space and upload time, and leaves you a tidier library.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Does this tool delete my duplicate photos?

No. A web page can't delete files on your computer or phone, and this one never tries. It shows you the duplicates, lets you choose which copy to keep, then gives you a CSV list of the files to delete yourself, or a zip containing only the photos you're keeping.

### Are my photos uploaded?

No. Every photo is read and compared inside your browser tab. If your browser can't open HEIC, AVIF or JPEG XL files itself, the page downloads the matching decoder from dragbin.com the first time it needs it (the HEIC one is about 1.5 MB). Your photos are never sent anywhere.

### How does it find photos that aren't exact copies?

Each photo is shrunk to a tiny 9 by 8 grayscale grid and turned into a 64-bit fingerprint of where it gets lighter or darker. Resized, re-compressed and lightly edited versions of a picture produce nearly the same fingerprint, so photos whose fingerprints differ by only a few bits are grouped together. Files that are byte-for-byte identical are also confirmed with a SHA-256 checksum.

### What do Strict, Normal and Loose mean?

They set how many of the 64 fingerprint bits may differ for two photos to count as the same picture: 4 for Strict, 8 for Normal and 12 for Loose. Strict mostly finds copies and resized versions. Loose also catches burst shots and near-identical frames, along with the occasional false match, so check those groups before deleting anything.

### Which copy does it suggest keeping?

In each group the photo with the most pixels is ticked to keep; if two are the same size, the larger file wins. You can tick or untick any photo before downloading the list or the zip.

### How many photos can I check at once?

Up to 3,000 photos per scan. Choosing a folder on a computer is the quickest way in; on a phone, select photos from your library. Large libraries take a few minutes, and you can cancel at any time and keep the results found so far.
