## Keep the full original too

Separate tracks are handy for editing and sharing; the original file is worth keeping. Store it in DragBin, encrypted on your device before it's uploaded. DragBin protects files with [client side](/client-side-encryption/), [quantum resistant encryption](/post-quantum-encryption/) (ML-KEM + AES-256) keeping sensitive data private with a [zero knowledge](/zero-knowledge-encryption/) security architecture.

## How to Unpack an MKV or MP4 into Separate Tracks

Three steps, no install and no account.

Step 1

Drop or choose one MKV, MP4, MOV, WebM or MPEG-TS file.

Step 2

Check the track list: type, codec, language, name, default and forced flags, length and approximate size.

Step 3

Extract one track or all of them, then download each file or everything as a zip.

## Why Unpack a Video File?

A single container often carries several languages, commentary tracks and a lossless soundtrack you may want on their own.

### Bit-for-Bit Copies

Streams are copied as they are, so a Dolby Digital track stays Dolby Digital and the video keeps every frame untouched.

### Every Language Track

Dubs, commentary and alternate mixes each get their own file, named with the track number and language.

### Fast, Even for Long Files

With no decoding involved, a two-hour film unpacks about as quickly as your device can read it.

## Private by Design

Your footage is read and split in this browser tab.

### No Uploads

The video is never sent to a server. Each stream is written in memory on your device and saved from there.

### Works Almost Anywhere

No video or audio encoding is needed, so it runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, including Firefox for Android and older Safari.

### The Right File Type

Each codec goes into a container made for it: H.264 into MP4, AAC into .aac or .m4a, Opus into .ogg, AC-3 into .mka.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Does extracting a stream lower its quality?

No. Each stream is copied into its new file packet for packet, without decoding or re-encoding, so the picture and sound are identical to the original. If a stream can't be stored without re-encoding, the tool tells you instead of converting it.

### What file type does each stream come out as?

H.264 and HEVC video become MP4, ProRes becomes MOV, and VP8, VP9 and AV1 become WebM. AAC audio is saved as .aac, or .m4a if you prefer, MP3 as .mp3, Opus and Vorbis as .ogg, FLAC as .flac and PCM as .wav. Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS are saved as .mka (Matroska audio). Files are named after the original with the track number and language, for example movie.track2.eng.aac.

### Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and split inside your browser tab and never sent to a server. Each extracted stream is created on your device and saved straight from the page.

### Can I get the subtitle tracks out too?

Not with this tool, because the browser engine it uses can't read subtitle tracks. For MKV and WebM files it lists them, and text subtitles (SRT, ASS, WebVTT) can be saved with the Extract Subtitles tool. Image-based subtitles such as PGS and VobSub can't be turned into text in the browser, and subtitle tracks inside MP4 and MOV files aren't listed.

### Why can't some tracks be extracted?

A few older codecs, such as MPEG-2 video, DivX and Xvid, can't be read in the browser, so those tracks are listed but can't be saved. AVI, WMV and FLV files can't be opened at all. MKV, MP4, MOV, WebM and MPEG-TS files with modern codecs work.

### Does it work on my phone or an older browser?

Yes. Since nothing is re-encoded, it doesn't need the browser's video or audio encoding features, so it also runs in Firefox for Android and older versions of Safari. Files can be up to 2 GB on a computer and 500 MB on a phone or tablet.
