## How to Extract Subtitles from an MKV File

Three steps, no install and no account:

Step 1

Drop or choose an MKV or WebM file. Large files are fine, because the video is read in chunks.

Step 2

Check the track list: language, name, format, default and forced flags, and how many lines each track has.

Step 3

Pick original format, SRT or WebVTT, then download one track or all of them as a ZIP.

## Why Extract Subtitles?

Subtitles tucked inside a video file are hard to edit, translate or reuse. As a separate file they work with any player, editor or upload form.

### Edit and Translate

Fix typos, translate lines or adjust timing in a plain text file instead of re-muxing the video.

### Use Them Anywhere

Upload captions with a video, load them in a different player, or keep them next to the file on a TV or media server.

### Pick the Right Track

See every language, the forced-only track and the default one before you save, so you take exactly what you need.

## Private and Built for Big Files

The tool reads the Matroska structure directly in your browser tab. It skips past video and audio data and keeps only the subtitle text.

### Nothing Uploaded

Your video is read locally and never sent to a server.

### Multi-GB Files

Files are read a few megabytes at a time, so even a large remux doesn't fill your memory.

### Original Formatting Kept

ASS tracks are rebuilt with their own styles and script header, so karaoke and sign styling survive.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Which subtitle tracks can I extract?

Text subtitle tracks stored in MKV and WebM files: SRT (Matroska S_TEXT/UTF8), ASS and SSA, and WebVTT. Each track is saved in its original format by default, so ASS styles, positions and effects stay intact (font files embedded in the MKV aren't extracted). You can also convert every track to SRT or WebVTT; converting ASS to those formats keeps the text, timing, italic, bold and underline but drops the rest of the styling.

### Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read by JavaScript in your browser tab, a few megabytes at a time, and nothing is sent to a server. Video and audio data is skipped over as each chunk is read, and only the subtitle text is kept.

### Why can't PGS or VobSub subtitles be extracted?

PGS (common on Blu-ray rips) and VobSub (from DVDs) store each line as a picture, not as text. Turning those pictures into SRT needs optical character recognition, which this tool doesn't do. The track list still shows them so you know they are there.

### Does it work with very large MKV files?

Yes. Files are never loaded whole, so a 20 GB remux works the same way as a 200 MB clip. Subtitle lines are spread through the entire file, so the tool reads it from start to finish; on a fast drive that usually takes seconds to a minute or two. You can watch the progress and cancel at any time. If a file has no text subtitle tracks, you get the answer right away without the full read.

### Can I extract subtitles from MP4 files?

Not yet. This tool reads MKV and WebM (Matroska) files only, and tells you when you drop an MP4 or MOV file. Renaming an MP4 to .mkv doesn't help, because the container inside is still MP4.

### What about compressed or encrypted subtitle tracks?

Tracks compressed with zlib (which older versions of mkvmerge applied to subtitles by default) or with header stripping are decompressed in your browser. Encrypted tracks can't be read, and the track list says so.
