# GIF to MP4 Converter: Smaller Files That Play Everywhere

Turn animated GIFs into MP4 or WebM video. The animation looks the same, keeps its timing, and usually ends up a fraction of the size. Everything runs in your browser, so your GIFs stay on your device.

MP4 plays almost everywhere. WebM suits websites and is sometimes smaller.

Video can't be transparent, so see-through areas (and the 1 px padding odd sizes need) get this colour.

MP4 has no loop flag. Sites and apps loop short muted clips themselves; bake loops in only if yours plays it once. Capped at 2 minutes in total.

## Work privately, then store privately with DragBin

Processing a file in your browser keeps it private in the moment. The files you keep and share need that same guarantee for the long run. DragBin protects files with [client side](/client-side-encryption/), [quantum resistant encryption](/post-quantum-encryption/) (ML-KEM + AES-256) keeping sensitive data private with a [zero knowledge](/zero-knowledge-encryption/) security architecture.

## How to Convert a GIF to MP4

Pick your settings, add GIFs, and download the videos.

Step 1

Choose MP4 or WebM, a background colour for transparent areas, and whether to bake in loops.

Step 2

Add one or more GIFs by dropping, choosing or pasting them, then press Convert.

Step 3

Check the preview and the size saving, then download each video or all of them as a zip.

## Why Convert GIFs to Video?

GIF is an old format that stores every frame as its own picture. Video codecs store only what changes, which is why sites quietly turn GIFs into video anyway.

### Much Smaller Files

The same animation as H.264 or VP9 is usually several times lighter, so pages and messages load faster.

### Timing Kept

Every frame keeps its own delay from the GIF, including uneven pauses.

### Loops When You Need Them

Players loop short clips on their own; you can also repeat the animation inside the file.

## Private and Simple

No account, no watermark, and nothing to install.

### Stays on Your Device

Decoding and encoding happen in your browser tab with its built-in video encoder. Only the tool's code is downloaded, from dragbin.com.

### Batch Conversion

Convert up to 20 GIFs in one go and download them together as a zip.

### Plays Everywhere

MP4 with H.264 plays on phones, browsers, chat apps and social sites. WebM is there when you want it.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?

No. The GIF is read, decoded and re-encoded as video inside your browser tab, using your browser's built-in video encoder. The page only downloads its own code from dragbin.com. Your files are never sent to a server.

### Why is the MP4 so much smaller than the GIF?

GIF stores each frame as a compressed image with at most 256 colours and has no real motion compression. H.264 and VP9 only store what changes between frames, so the same animation usually ends up several times smaller, often with better colour.

### Will the video loop like the GIF did?

An MP4 or WebM file has no loop setting of its own. Sites and apps loop it when they play it as a looping, muted video, which is how most platforms show GIF-style clips. If yours plays it once, set Bake in loops to repeat the animation inside the file, up to 10 times or 2 minutes in total.

### What happens to transparent areas?

MP4 video can't be transparent, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you choose: white, black or any custom colour. H.264 also needs an even width and height, so an odd-sized GIF gets one extra pixel row or column in that colour.

### Does it keep the GIF's speed?

Yes. Each frame keeps its own delay from the GIF. Frames with a delay of 0 or 10 ms play at 100 ms, which is what Chrome, Firefox and Safari do with them, so the video runs at the speed you saw in your browser.

### Which browsers work, and how big can the GIF be?

It needs the WebCodecs video encoder: current Chrome, Edge and Firefox on a computer, Chrome on Android, and Safari 16.4 or later. Firefox for Android can't encode video yet, and if a browser can't make MP4 the tool says so; pick WebM instead. Each GIF can be up to 50 MB on a computer and 25 MB on phones and tablets, and you can convert up to 20 at once.
