Most MKV files hold H.264 or HEVC video with AAC, MP3 or Dolby audio, and an MP4 can hold all of those unchanged, so the streams are copied into the new file in seconds with no quality loss. MKVs with VP9, VP8 or AV1 video are re-encoded to H.264, and Opus or Vorbis audio is re-encoded to AAC, which is slower. Each file is labelled before you convert so you know which applies. ### What happens to the subtitles and extra audio tracks? They're left out. The MP4 gets the MKV's main video track and main audio track only.
