MOVs from iPhones, Macs and most cameras hold H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, and an MP4 can hold those unchanged, so they're copied across in seconds with no quality loss. Only when you tick "Always re-encode the video" is the picture compressed again, which loses a little detail. ### What happens to iPhone HEVC videos? By default the HEVC (H.265) video is copied into the MP4 as it is. That works in every current browser, Firefox included, because nothing is decoded. HEVC MP4s play on recent Apple devices and most newer TVs, but some Windows PCs need Microsoft's HEVC extension. For an H.264 MP4 that plays everywhere, tick "Always re-encode the video": that needs a browser that can decode HEVC, which means Safari, or Chrome or Edge on a computer with HEVC hardware support. Firefox can't. The preview may not play HEVC in Firefox either, even though the remux works. ### Will portrait videos stay upright? Yes. Phones store a rotation flag rather than turning the picture itself, and MP4 keeps that flag, so a video filmed upright still plays upright. ### Can I convert a ProRes MOV to MP4? No. Browsers can't decode ProRes, so it can't be re-encoded here, and most players won't open ProRes inside an MP4.
