# Resize Video: Change Resolution or Fit for Reels

Shrink a 4K clip to 1080p or 720p, type an exact size, or reshape a video for Reels, TikTok, Shorts and square posts with black bars or a crop. It all happens in your browser, so the video stays on your device.

## How to Resize a Video

One video at a time, saved as H.264.

Step 1

Drop or choose a video. Its current size appears straight away.

Step 2

Pick a resolution, a custom width and height, or a social format and how it should fill the frame.

Step 3

Check the target size, press Resize video, then download the result.

## Why Use This Video Resizer?

The sizes people actually need, without exporting from an editor.

### Smaller Files

Dropping from 4K to 1080p or 720p cuts the file size for email, chat apps and slow uploads.

### Social Formats

9:16, 1:1, 4:5 and 16:9 presets at 1080 pixels wide, fitted with bars or filled and cropped.

### No Accidental Upscaling

Resolution presets never make a video bigger than it is unless you choose to.

## Your Footage Stays Private

Family clips, client work and unreleased edits shouldn't need a stranger's server just to change size.

### No Uploads

The video is decoded and re-encoded in this browser tab and saved to your device.

### Desktop or Phone

Works in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Phones handle files up to 500 MB.

### Sound Kept As-Is

AAC and MP3 soundtracks are copied without re-encoding, so the audio loses nothing.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is read and re-encoded inside your browser tab using your device's own video encoder, and the result is saved straight to your device. Nothing about the file is sent to a server. Browsers without their own AAC audio encoder (Firefox, and Chrome or Edge on most Linux systems) may download one from dragbin.com the first time a soundtrack has to be re-encoded, for example Opus audio in a WebM going into an MP4. Only that encoder is downloaded; your video stays on your device.

### What is the difference between "fit with bars" and "fill and crop"?

Fit with bars keeps the whole picture and adds black bars where the shape doesn't match, for example above and below a landscape clip placed in a 9:16 frame. Fill and crop scales the picture until it covers the whole frame and trims whatever spills over the edges, so nothing is black but the sides (or top and bottom) are cut off.

### Will resizing to a bigger resolution make my video sharper?

No. Scaling up can't add detail that was never recorded; it only makes the file larger. That's why the resolution presets stop at your video's own height unless you tick the option to allow upscaling.

### Why is the output size slightly different from what I typed?

H.264 video needs an even width and height, so odd numbers are rounded up by one pixel. The target size shown before you start already includes that rounding.

### What format is the resized video, and is the sound kept?

The picture is re-encoded as H.264, saved in an MP4 by default (MOV and MKV files can stay in their own container). AAC and MP3 soundtracks are copied unchanged. Sound in a codec MP4 can't hold, such as Opus from a WebM, is converted to AAC; if the browser can't decode it, the video is saved without sound and the page tells you.

### Which browsers and file sizes work?

Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4 or later on desktop, plus Chrome and Safari on phones. Firefox for Android has no video encoder for web pages yet. Files up to 2 GB work on computers and up to 500 MB on phones and tablets, because the whole result is held in memory before you save it.
