# Split Audio into Parts: Cut MP3 by Time Free

Cut a long recording into equal parts, fixed-length chunks, or at the exact moments you choose. MP3 files are split without re-encoding, and everything happens in your browser, so the audio stays on your device.

Note: your audio is processed on this device and is never uploaded. The MP3 encoder, and the AAC encoder in browsers without their own, are downloaded from dragbin.com the first time you save in those formats.

MP3 encoding by [LAME](https://lame.sourceforge.io/) ([LGPL](https://lame.sourceforge.io/license.txt)), loaded as a separate file only when needed.

AAC encoding (in browsers without a built-in AAC encoder) by [FFmpeg's libavcodec](https://ffmpeg.org/) ([LGPL-2.1-or-later](https://ffmpeg.org/legal.html)), loaded as a separate file only when needed.

## Split the recording? Keep the original safe

Parts are handy to share, but the full recording is the one to keep. Store it in DragBin, encrypted on your device before it's uploaded. DragBin protects files with [client side](/client-side-encryption/), [quantum resistant encryption](/post-quantum-encryption/) (ML-KEM + AES-256) keeping sensitive data private with a [zero knowledge](/zero-knowledge-encryption/) security architecture.

## How to Split an Audio File

Add one file, decide where the cuts go, and save the parts.

Step 1

Drop, paste or choose an audio file, or a video whose soundtrack you want.

Step 2

Pick equal parts, a part length in minutes and seconds, or your own split points, then the output format.

Step 3

Press Split and download each part, or all of them as one zip.

## Why Use This Audio Splitter?

It covers the usual reasons to chop up audio: long podcasts, lectures, mixes and voice notes.

### Three Ways to Cut

Equal parts, a fixed part length, or split points you place on the waveform and fine-tune by typing.

### Lossless MP3 Splits

MP3 into MP3 copies the original frames, so parts sound exactly like the source and come out fast.

### Ready-Numbered Parts

Parts are named lecture-part01.mp3, lecture-part02.mp3 and so on, and download one by one or as a zip.

## Your Recordings Stay Private

Interviews, meetings and unreleased music shouldn't pass through someone else's server just to be cut up.

### No Uploads

Splitting runs in the browser tab. For MP3 output, and AAC in browsers without their own encoder, the page downloads an encoder from dragbin.com once; your audio is never sent anywhere.

### Computer or Phone

Works in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 26 or later. Older Safari can still split MP3 into MP3.

### Up to 100 Parts

Each part is at least one second long, with the time range and length shown next to its download.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is my audio uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read, cut and saved inside your browser tab. The only downloads are the page itself and, the first time you save MP3 or (in browsers without their own AAC encoder) M4A parts, an encoder file fetched from dragbin.com. Your audio never leaves your device.

### Does splitting an MP3 lower its quality?

Not when you keep MP3 output. MP3 frames are copied into each part as they are, so nothing is re-encoded and splitting is fast. Each cut lands on the nearest MP3 frame boundary, so neighbouring parts can share a few hundredths of a second. If a part can't be copied it is re-encoded at 192 kbps, and its row says re-encoded. Other formats are always re-encoded.

### What are the three ways to split?

Equal parts divides the audio into 2 to 100 pieces of the same length. Every minutes and seconds makes a new part at a fixed interval, with a shorter last part; a leftover under one second is added to the part before it. Chosen points lets you move a marker, add a split at that spot, and fine-tune each split time by typing it.

### Are there limits?

Up to 100 parts per file, and each part must be at least one second long. Files can be up to 2 GB on computers and 500 MB on phones and tablets. Parts are held in memory until you download them, so very long uncompressed WAV output can be refused on smaller devices.

### Which formats can I use?

Input can be MP3, M4A or AAC, WAV, FLAC, Ogg or Opus, or the soundtrack of an MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM video. By default each part keeps the input's format; FLAC and WAV become WAV. You can also choose MP3, WAV, AAC (.m4a) or Opus (.ogg). Parts are named like interview-part01.mp3.

### Why doesn't it work in my browser?

Re-encoding uses the browser's built-in audio decoders (WebCodecs), available in current Chrome, Edge and Firefox on computers and in Safari 26 or later. In older Safari and Firefox for Android you can still split MP3 into MP3, because that copies frames without decoding, and WAV into WAV.
