# Video Converter: MP4, WebM, MOV and MKV

Change a video's format without waiting for an upload. Add one or more files, pick MP4, WebM, MOV or MKV, and see for each one whether it can simply be copied into the new format or has to be re-encoded, before anything runs.

H.264

Always re-encode the videoOff: video that already fits the new format is copied as is, in seconds and with no quality loss. On: every file is re-encoded to H.264, which is slower but gives the most widely playable file.

Note: videos are converted on your device and never uploaded. Only the main video and audio tracks are kept; subtitles and extra audio tracks are left out. In browsers without their own AAC encoder (Firefox, and Chrome or Edge on Linux), turning Opus or Vorbis audio into AAC downloads an encoder from dragbin.com the first time; only the encoder is downloaded.

AAC encoding (in browsers without a built-in AAC encoder) by [FFmpeg's libavcodec](https://ffmpeg.org/) ([LGPL-2.1-or-later](https://ffmpeg.org/legal.html)), loaded as a separate file only when needed.

Common conversions: [MKV to MP4](/tools/mkv-to-mp4/), [MOV to MP4](/tools/mov-to-mp4/) and [WebM to MP4](/tools/webm-to-mp4/).

## Converted your videos? Keep the originals safe

A converted copy is handy for sharing, but the original is the one worth keeping. Store it in DragBin, encrypted on your device before it's uploaded. DragBin protects files with [client side](/client-side-encryption/), [quantum resistant encryption](/post-quantum-encryption/) (ML-KEM + AES-256) keeping sensitive data private with a [zero knowledge](/zero-knowledge-encryption/) security architecture.

## How to Convert a Video

Pick the format, check the plan for each file, then convert.

Step 1

Choose the output format. MP4 is preselected because it plays almost everywhere.

Step 2

Drop, paste or choose your videos. Each file is checked and marked as a fast remux or a re-encode, with the reason.

Step 3

Press Convert, then download each video or all of them as a zip.

## Why Use This Video Converter?

Most converters re-encode everything. This one only re-encodes when the new format can't hold what's in the file.

### Remux in Seconds

When the codecs already fit, the video and audio are copied into the new container untouched: no quality loss, no long wait.

### Know Before You Convert

Every file shows what will happen to its video and audio, and why, so a slow re-encode never comes as a surprise.

### Batch Conversion

Add several videos at once. They're converted one after another and can be downloaded together as a zip.

## Your Videos Stay on Your Device

Home videos and work recordings are private. The conversion happens inside your browser tab.

### No Uploads

Your videos are never sent anywhere. In some browsers an AAC audio encoder is downloaded from dragbin.com when it's needed; that's the only download.

### Real Codec Choices

Re-encode to H.264 for MP4 and MOV, or VP9 or AV1 for WebM and MKV, limited to what your browser can actually encode.

### Computer or Phone

Works in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Remuxing even works in browsers that can't decode video.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What's the difference between remuxing and re-encoding?

A video file is a container (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM) holding compressed video and audio streams. Remuxing moves those streams into a new container without touching them, so it takes seconds and loses nothing. Re-encoding decompresses the video and compresses it again in another codec, which is much slower and loses a little quality. The converter checks each file first and tells you which of the two it will do, and why, before you start.

### Are my videos uploaded?

No. Videos are read and converted inside your browser tab and never sent to a server. In browsers without their own AAC encoder (Firefox, and Chrome or Edge on Linux), converting Opus or Vorbis audio to AAC for MP4 or MOV downloads that encoder from dragbin.com the first time. Only the encoder is downloaded; your videos stay on your device.

### Which formats can I convert?

You can read MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, M4V, 3GP and MPEG-TS files and save them as MP4, WebM, MOV or MKV. AVI, WMV, FLV and MPEG program streams (.mpg, .vob) can't be read in the browser, and neither can old codecs such as DivX, Xvid, MPEG-2 or Windows Media Video inside an MKV. Files can be up to 2 GB on a computer and 500 MB on a phone or tablet.

### Why does my file need re-encoding?

WebM only holds VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Opus or Vorbis audio, so anything else is re-encoded on the way in. For MP4 and MOV the converter keeps H.264 and HEVC as they are but re-encodes VP9, VP8 and AV1 to H.264, because many players and editors won't open those in an MP4. MKV and WebM can't store a rotation flag, so phone videos filmed upright are re-encoded to turn the picture the right way. Tick "Always re-encode the video" to re-encode every file anyway.

### Which browsers does it work in?

Remuxing works in any current browser, including Firefox for Android and older Safari, because nothing is decoded. Re-encoding uses the browser's WebCodecs support: Chrome, Edge, Firefox on a computer, and Safari 16.4 or later. Re-encoding audio also needs Safari 26 or later on Apple devices. HEVC (H.265) video, common from iPhones, can be decoded by Safari, by Chrome and Edge only on computers with hardware support for it, and not by Firefox.

### Are subtitles and extra audio tracks kept?

No. The converter keeps the main video track and the main audio track. Subtitles, chapters and additional audio languages are left out. To save the subtitles from an MKV file first, use the Extract Subtitles tool.
