## How to Turn a Video into a GIF

One video at a time. GIFs have no sound, so only the picture is used.

Step 1

Drop or choose a video. It plays on the page so you can find the moment you want.

Step 2

Drag the handles to select up to 30 seconds, then set the width, frame rate, looping and colours.

Step 3

Press Make GIF, check the preview, and download it.

## Why Use This Video to GIF Converter?

It cuts the moment you want straight out of the video, without an editor, an account or a watermark.

### Exact Clip Selection

Drag the start and end handles while the video follows along, or type times down to the millisecond.

### Size and Speed Control

Widths from 240 to 800 pixels and 5 to 25 frames per second, looping forever or playing once.

### Steady Colours

One palette built from frames across the clip keeps backgrounds from flickering between frames.

## Your Video Stays on Your Device

Screen recordings and family clips often show things you'd rather not hand to a stranger's server.

### No Uploads

Frames are decoded and encoded into a GIF in this browser tab. Only the page's code comes from dragbin.com.

### Size Estimate First

See a rough file size range before encoding, so you can trim settings instead of waiting for a huge file.

### Desktop or Phone

Current Chrome, Edge and Safari, plus Firefox on a computer. Phones take videos up to 500 MB and clips up to 15 seconds.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser decodes the frames and builds the GIF inside this tab, and the result is saved straight to your device. The page only downloads its own code from dragbin.com; the video itself is never sent to a server.

### How long can the GIF be?

Up to 30 seconds per GIF on a computer and 15 seconds on phones and tablets. A GIF stores every frame as a full picture, so 30 seconds at 15 frames per second is 450 images, and the whole file is built in memory. Longer clips mean long waits, files that are too big to share, and crashes on phones.

### Why is the GIF bigger than my video?

Video formats like MP4 only store what changes between frames, while a GIF compresses each frame on its own using at most 256 colours. A GIF is often several times larger than the MP4 it came from. To shrink it, choose a smaller width or a lower frame rate, or shorten the clip. If the place you're posting accepts video, a short MP4 looks better and is much smaller.

### What does the colours setting do?

GIF frames can only use 256 colours. One palette for the whole clip (the default) picks shared colours from frames across your selection, which keeps flat areas steady and the file slightly smaller. A palette per frame fits each frame's colours separately, which suits clips that jump between very different scenes but can make backgrounds shimmer. There's no dithering, so smooth gradients such as skies may show bands.

### Which videos and browsers work?

MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files with a video codec your browser can decode, usually H.264, VP8 and VP9, and often HEVC and AV1 depending on your browser and hardware. It needs WebCodecs: current Chrome, Edge and Firefox on a computer, and Safari 16.4 or later. Firefox for Android can't run it. GIFs have no sound, so the audio is left out.

### Why do some frame rates play slightly unevenly?

GIF timing is stored in hundredths of a second, so 12 or 15 frames per second can't be exact. Frame delays alternate (for example 80 and 90 ms at 12 fps) so the GIF stays in step with the original clip overall. Rates of 5, 10, 20 and 25 fps are exact.
